North Carolina A&T Takes Top Spot as Nation’s Largest HBCU

With more than 10,700 students enrolled this fall, North Carolina A&T State University has taken the top spot as the nation’s largest HBCU by student enrollment.

The Greensboro News and Record yesterday reported on the Aggies’ latest accolade, which places the university 200 students ahead of Howard University and more than 500 ahead of Florida A&M University, the perennial title holder.

University officials attributed A&T’s enrollment jump, about 1.6 percent over the last year, to a focus on recruiting transfer students and undergraduate retention strategies.

“It doesn’t serve you well if you bring them in one door and send them out the other,” said Akua Matherson, the university’s associate vice chancellor of enrollment management.
